Holding Down a House

In a previous post we shared photos of the threaded stainless steel rods that are embedded in the grade beams and run through the foundation walls. There are a lot of them in several sizes. All of which serve the same purpose - holding down the house. More specifically, maintaining the connection between the framing and the foundation all the way through to the pilings. Below you can see them in the garage foundation wall along with some utility conduits and the City-inspected piece of rebar that acts as a ground for the house (I need to check with Brian on that, but it's the only thing I can think of.)

The structural engineers took to heart Rule #1. This house isn't going anywhere. The first photo below is the garage foundation hold downs, also seen above to the right.

The manufacturer of the hold downs is Simpson. I found spec sheets for the hold downs and have included links at the end of this post so our reader can geek out on the various types and loads they can handle. I didn't understand it all, but it sounds impressive. Following are more photos of the hold downs and their locations. Pretty sturdy stuff!
